Episode 6. Marek Wolfryd

For the sixth episode of our OnAIR series, we visited Marek Wolfryd’s studio in Roma Sur, Mexico City as he was finalizing his presentation for ““The Great Logic of Contents that Bind the World into Existence or “Season's Greetings!””, which marks his first New York solo exhibition. Merging several of his interests and research that Wolfryd has worked on in the last few years, this exhibition leans into his passion and fascination for activating and questioning forms of artistic production in late capitalism, the circulation of images, merchandise, and intellectual property subjectivities — all of which are deeply rooted in Western thought.

How would you describe your current studio?

We are in a building in the neighborhood of Roma Sur in Mexico City. I find it really interesting, as I work with a lot of appropriation in my own practice, that my studio is inside a trompe-l’œil of cheese. So I guess that every time I come here and I see that reflects or instigates a little bit of what I do as my own work.

You’re currently working on your upcoming show. Can you tell us more about the meaning behind the exhibition, and what it symbolizes?

My practice is mostly research based practice and conceptually inclined practice. A lot of the pieces I produce, I design them, and then I manufacture them, half and half. Sometimes I manufacture outside of Mexico and half I manufacture in Mexico. I really like the idea of lines of production. A lot of my work has to do with the concept of copious mediums. I research a lot of the intersection between economy, society, and culture, and how I can see that from a historical perspective through the research I make.

Is there anything you like to listen to/watch/read/look at etc. for inspiration?

One of the particular pieces in the show, is a triptych, oil on linen. The images it portrays are publicity images made by a company called Lynche Blanche. At some point in the 20th century, they started doing art merchandising objects. I was particularly interested in these candle holders. I took those images, those shots, and the one that I like the most is an undertake of the candle holder where you can see the material its made of the Andy Warhol Foundation copyrighted images.

Name your favorite Drink Spot.

Favorite drink spot would definitely be Union Bari Veri, which is an artist run bar. I sometimes play music there.
